Steve Gilliard notes that perennial conservative vanity candidate Ralph Nader has made a “contribution” to the Schiavo debate.

However, the title of the post is (unintentionally, I’m sure) misleading. As Gilliard (among many others) has demonstrated, Nader didn’t “cross over” to the dark side; he’s been there for a long time. The man is a flat-out reactionary. His support of the attempts to force Terri Schiavo to accept medical treatment without her consent is entirely consistent with his longstanding criticism of “feticide” and “gonadal politics.” When he said, during his successful run to put George Bush in the White House in 2000, that he preferred Bush, he was serious, and not just strategically. The theocratic Republican base suits him just fine. Whatever was progressive about Nader’s project was swallowed by its paranoia and authoritarian moralism long, long ago. This is just another data point.
