Useless as Tits on a Bull
The Poor Man gives us the Roll Call for the Democrats who voted for torture and against any semblance of the rule of law by voting to confirm Alberto Gonzalez:
Landrieu (D-LA)
Lieberman (D-CT)
Nelson (D-FL)
Nelson (D-NE)
Pryor (D-AR)
Salazar (D-CO)
So, we have five Senators from red states, most of which have large Hispanic populations. And then we have, of course, Joe Lieberman. And it wasn’t a tepid endorsement either.
But, I’m sure, he was ready to go on the attack about the Bush’s plan to dismantle Social Security:
`America works best when we work together. I am confident we can find common ground with many parts of the president’s agenda, and I am committed to work in a bipartisan way to do what’s best for our state and for our nation in the important year ahead.” — Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn.
This man cannot be the Democratic candidate for Senate in 2006.
I think a distinction made by Atrios and others should also be kept in mind here. Lieberman’s voting record is moderate, not reactionary like, say, Zell Miller, and other UATOABs like Peter Bienhart will continue to defend him. Admittedly, it’s not a good record for a Senator from Connecticut, but you could live with it. That’s not the point. You can be a moderate and a partisan Democrat, who’s not willing to give cover to the President on core issues where your position isn’t even popular in your home state. What makes Lieberman intolerable is that he undermines the Democrats every chance he gets, and he doesn’t come from a red state where we need to put up with that. The Gonzales vote is the biggest disgrace in a career filled with them. He must go. I don’t care if the candidate is Paul Newman or Wayne Knight. Get rid of him.
