Congratulations to Ichiro Suzuki, who just singled up the middle to break George Sisler’s 84 year old hit record. A classy guy, he took time to speak with the Sisler family after getting the hit.

We had a conversation earlier on the blog comparing Sisler with Ichiro. Although Ichiro is clearly the more valuable defensive player, in fairness to Sisler, he did post OPS+ of 181, 140, and 170 in his 27th, 28th, and 29th years. Ichiro’s comparable numbers are 127, 125, and 110. Sisler didn’t play at age 30, and began declining rapidly at age 31. Up to this point in their respective careers, however, Sisler seems the superior player.
