One of the many great features on baseball reference.com is a feature that allows you to look up the players who share your birthday. (And to think my degree only took six years!) Alas, my team is almost as crappy as my list of celebrity birthdays (although Thora Birch is a nice recent addition to Lawrence Welk, and Douglas Adams is nice.) The all-star team would be:

C Bunn
1B None
2B Castellano
3B Bucher
SS None
LF Bradley
CF Geronimo
RF Abreu
SP Ellis
RP Reed
MGR–Winkles

Hell of an outfield–three gold glovers with good-to-exceptional offense on the corners–but that’s about it. My best IF –by far–is…Jim Bucher? On the other hand, winning isn’t everything, and in terms of color we’re in great shape–a guy who threw a no-hitter on acid, Winkles (well, I can’t explain it if you didn’t hear him do color for the Expos, but if you think there just isn’t enough about milking cows on modern broadcasts), a Jehovah’s witness who threw the fateful 162nd game for the 1993 Giants, people named after various forms of currency, a guy named “Colliflower” whose one major league experience was going 1-11…for the 1899 Cleveland Spiders (but their Pythagorean W-L was 26-128!) Cool.

I wonder what a typical team looks like? Mine does seem better than today’s, although mid-80s Expos icons Rex Hudler and Bryn Smith would be a nice fit…
