Improving M’s coverage?

David Locke actually tackles an issue that the toadying local sports media generally won’t touch: the Mariner’s persistent inability to develop minor league position players. He identifies only five “impact” players drafted by the M’s since Edgar Martinez was called up in 1987. He doesn’t define “impact” but one of the impact players is Greg Briley so the bar ain’t too high. He also doesn’t count those players the M’s developed who have had impact elsewhere (Jose Cruz and Jason Varitek OTOH, I’m sure there are a few others), but it still seems as though it must be considered a long-term institutional failure of staggering proportions. And it’s good to see the local media taking this up.
