My post below on oil and alternative energy sources made no comment on nuclear power. There is a good reason for that–I’m not at all sure what I should think about nuclear power. I’ve seen convincing cases for it and against it. All I’m really sure about it that it’s biggest supporters and biggest detractors aren’t really all that helpful.

So it gives me no small pleasure to note that a smart guy like John Quiggin isĀ similarly unsure what to think. Fortunately, he’s actually got a readership of both substantial size and smarts. The discussion on this entry should be worth following.

UPDATE: Perhaps I spoke too soon. A commenter suggests that dealing with nuclear waste for 10,000 years is a more daunting prospect than global warming. It would be charitable to call that insane. The waste issue just isn’t entirely trivial, but it’s also not as intractable as people are eager to assume it is. It’s not one of the main reasons nuclear power gives me some pause.
