For the Boomers at the core of the LGM comment section at least, Steve Albini might not be a huge name for you. For the Gen Xers at the core of the LGM front pagers though, Steve Albini is an absolute legend, one of the most important figures in the entire history of rock and roll and arguably one of the most important producers in the entire history of recorded music. While an excellent rocker in his own bands such as Big Black and Shellac, it was his production that shaped the sound of alternative rock in the 1990s.

Among the albums Albini produced included Nirvana’s In Utero, PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me, Pixies’ Surfer Rosa, The Jesus Lizard’s Goat, The Breeders’ Pod, Jawbreaker’s 24 Hour Revenge Therapy, Joanna Newsom’s Ys, and albums by Superchunk, Melt Banana, Low, Veruca Salt, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Slint, The Sadies, Whitehouse, Neurosis, Nina Nastasia, Songs: Ohia, Scout Niblett, Screaming Females, Ty Segall, Laura Jane Grace, and so many others. Plus many Robbie Fulks albums.

Steve Albini died of a heart attack today. He was 61 years old. RIP.
