Credit Where Credit is Due
Didn’t think he had this in him:
One key Republican, Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah, announced on the Senate floor that he was breaking with his party. Romney appeared to choke up as he spoke of his deep faith and “oath before God” demanding that he vote for impeachment.
“The president is guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust,” Romney said on the Senate floor. “What the president did was wrong, grievously wrong.”
Yes, Utah is one state where the Republican Party is a lot more popular than Trump, so he doesn’t fear losing a primary challenge. But compare, say, Lamar! Alexander, an extremely rich guy who’s pushing 80 and not running for anything, and still give Trump his dignity on the way out the door. Or Corker and Flake, who continued to back Trump to the hilt even as they knew their political careers were over. Give Mittens some credit on this one.
Even more credit to Doug Jones voting to convict Trump. This is like the red state senators who voted against Kavanaugh on the way out. No one vote is going to turn the election, and if you’re going to lose better to do it by doing the right thing than doing the wrong thing and still losing.
…compare Jones to Susan Collins, who is also very likely to be leaving office next January, and will do so with none of her dignity intact:
Just spoke with Sen. Collins
She now says she probably shouldn't have said that she "believes" Pres. Trump has learned his lessons from the fallout from his dealings with Ukraine and #Impeachment
She now says a better word would have been "hopes"#mepolitics pic.twitter.com/k5pC3nrVsc— Gregg Lagerquist (@GreggWGME) February 5, 2020
