MCC officials were, at best, ludicrously negligent in suicide of America’s most famous recent indicted person
After Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide once, MCC officials not only took him of suicide watch quickly but failed to observe the more lax procedures that were suppose to still be in place:
Jeffrey Epstein, the financier who apparently hanged himself in a federal jail in Manhattan, was supposed to have been checked by guards every 30 minutes, but that procedure was not being followed the night before he was found, a law-enforcement official with knowledge of his detention said.
In addition, the jail had transferred his cellmate and allowed Mr. Epstein to be housed alone in a cell just two weeks after he had been taken off suicide watch, a decision that also violated the jail’s normal procedure, two officials said.
The disclosures about apparent failures in Mr. Epstein’s detention at the Metropolitan Correctional Center deepened questions about his apparent suicide and are very likely to be the focus of inquiries by the Justice Department and the F.B.I.
It’s not irrational for people to be suspicious of this, particularly given that not only Epstein but a bunch of Epstein’s associates who didn’t make any concession to the government were given absurdly generous nonprosecution agreements by a DA who remained in good enough standing among America’s elites to become Secretary of Labor. But the simplest explanation for Epstein’s death — that jails are run with such indifference to human life that a nationally known prisoner could slowly strangle himself to death — is also 1)the most likely to be correct and 2)if anything the most discomfiting. If they can’t make any effort to keep Epstein alive imagine how little they care about the lives of the typical criminal defendant. Conspiracy might be a more comforting explanation than gross incompetence but Occam’s Razor points to the latter.
/4 You find it implausible because jailers/law enforcement would surely get into huge trouble for letting something like this happen. Consequences? To law enforcement? For something happening to someone in custody? You gullible dipshit.— WhatFreshHellIsThisHat (@Popehat) August 10, 2019
