By I think Matt is right in general that most sex scandals are survivable if the politician just refuses to resign. Certainly, Weiner could have stayed on and been re-elected. But while any U.S. senator has leverage, being a member of the House is a largely powerless position unless you’re a leader or have the support of you’re party’s leadership. Weiner clearly didn’t, so it’s not surprising that he would resign rather than beating his head against walls.
