Analysts on Wolf Blitzer were quick to point out what Obama didn’t talk about tonight. Guns. The vanishing middle class. The foreclosure crisis.  Also, Tunisia but not Egypt. Of course, CBS’ poll showed 83% approval of the speech, so it was obviously pretested very carefully.

The line that caught my attention wasn’t listed among HP’s memorable quotes from the speech:

We believe that in a country where every race and faith and point of view can be found, we are still bound together as one people; that we share common hopes and a common creed; that the dreams of a little girl in Tucson are not so different than those of our own children, and that they all deserve the chance to be fulfilled.

A shame these tropes were so woefully disconnected from his later platitudes about migrants’ rights. If he invokes 9-year-old Arizona girls gunned down in cold blood in a rumored upcoming gun violence speech, I hope he makes mention of Brisenia Flores alongside Christina Green.
